The Miami home pool safety checklist

8 min read

If you own a pool in Miami-Dade, you already know the stakes. Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death for children ages 1–4 in Florida — ahead of car accidents, ahead of disease. The good news: layered protection reduces drowning risk by more than 95%. The bad news: most homes have gaps in those layers without realizing it.

This is the same checklist we run when we do an in-home safety audit. Walk it yourself this weekend.

Layer 1 — Barriers

  • Pool fence on all four sides, at least 4 feet tall, no climbable footholds.
  • Self-closing, self-latching gate. Latch on the pool-side, out of a toddler’s reach.
  • No furniture, planters, or coolers pushed against the fence (instant ladder for a 2-year-old).
  • Doors and windows leading to the pool area have working locks placed high.

Layer 2 — Alarms

  • Door alarm on every door leading to the pool. Loud, distinct, on power.
  • Pool surface alarm or sub-surface alarm if you have a high-risk layout.
  • Test every alarm monthly. Half the alarms we find on audits no longer work.

Layer 3 — Supervision

About 88% of childhood drownings happen with an adult present. "Watching" while scrolling a phone is not supervision. Designate a Water Watcher — one adult who is not eating, not drinking, not on a phone — for the entire time anyone is in the water. Rotate every 15 minutes if you can.

Layer 4 — Swim skills

Formal swim lessons reduce the risk of childhood drowning by up to 88%. That is one of the most powerful interventions in pediatric health. Every child in a household with a pool should be in lessons — and adults who can’t swim should be too.

Layer 5 — Emergency response

  • A working phone within sight of the pool at all times.
  • A printed sign with 911, your address, and the nearest cross street.
  • Rescue equipment (reaching pole, life ring) mounted poolside.
  • At least one adult in the household trained in infant and child CPR. Refresh every 2 years.

No single layer is enough on its own. The 95% risk reduction comes from stacking them. If we run an audit at your home, you get a written report and a printed safety card for the fridge. Call us if you want one.
